ACADEMIC DEPARTMENTS
ENGLISH
Four units of English are required for high school students to graduate in New York state. Our program is designed to foster the reading, writing, listening, speaking, language, and thinking skills necessary to be college and career ready. Students will be required to read, analyze and synthesize across literary and informational texts; write for multiple audiences, tasks, and purposes; listen and speak in collaborative discussions with their peers; and demonstrate a solid command of the English language.
Students and their families work with their school counselor to select the best fit, according to reading and writing skills, recommendations by the English teacher, state assessments, and student performance. Honors and IB-level classes are chosen for students who meet the established criteria. All 11th grade students are required by New York State to take the Common Core English Regents Examination; a student must pass this exam in order to earn a diploma in New York State.
