FERPA NOTIFICATION

Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) affords parents certain rights in regards to their children’s educational records. At the age of 18 these rights transfer to the student (eligible student). These rights are:

  1. Right to Review Educational Records

The right of parents or an eligible student to inspect and review the student's education records. Copies are not required to be provided and if they are, the school can charge a fee for these copies.

  1. Right to Request Record Amendments

The right of parents or an eligible student to request an amendment of the student’s education records that the parent or eligible student believes are inaccurate. If the School decides not to amend the record as requested by the parent or eligible student, the School will notify the parent or eligible student of the decision and advise them of their right to a hearing regarding the request for amendment. If the School does not amend the record after the hearing, the parents or eligible student have the right to place a statement in the file about the contested amendment.

  1. Right to Disclose Personally Identifiable Information

The right to consent to disclosures of personally identifiable information contained in the student's education records, with some exceptions covered under law. These exceptions include compliance with judicial orders and subpoenas, schools the student is transferring to, for school audits or evaluations, and financial aid for the student.

  1. Right to File a Complaint with USDE

The right to file a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education concerning alleged failures by the School District to comply with the requirements of FERPA. Emails can be sent to The U.S. Department of Education or postmarked to the below address. For more information visit the complaint section of the U.S. Department of Education’s FERPA website.
