LEADERSHIP HANDBOOK
LIBRARY
Supervision of students in the Library:
Teachers and Librarians must share responsibility for student supervision in the library when working with students in grades 6 – 12. It is recommended that teachers and librarians also work together and share responsibility for student supervision in the library when working with students in pre- kindergarten through grade 5. Please remind classroom/subject area teachers to remain with their classes on visits to the school’s library.
Teachers and librarians should cooperatively plan the library information literacy program, which is an outgrowth of the educational goals and objectives of the classroom. The classroom/subject area teacher can then reinforce skills learned in the library while the library provides the laboratory situation for the reinforcement and extension of the classroom skills. Working together, teachers and librarians will be able to meet student needs more effectively.
Use of the library in the absence of a certified librarian:
Teacher aides and/or volunteers/parents cannot staff libraries on days when a librarian is not scheduled. However, teacher aides and/or volunteers/parents can work under the direction of a certified librarian when the librarian is present.
If necessary, teachers may use the library with their classes for research when the librarian is not scheduled. Please note, however, that library materials cannot leave the library in this instance, and it is the responsibility of the teacher to ensure that the library facility is locked upon exiting.
Circulation of library materials can only occur on days when the librarian is scheduled.
Whenever possible, extra duties should not be assigned to the librarian.
