Superintendent's Brief

SUPERINTENDENT'S BRIEF

Good afternoon and happy Friday,

I hope my note today finds you doing well after another another busy week around Schenectady schools. I encourage all of our students and teachers to finish strong and stay motivated as the weather gets warmer and the days get longer.

We had many large scale events this week and it all started on Monday with the second meeting of the Superintendent's Student Advisory Council. We were thrilled to be able to include 40+ students at this meeting held at SUNY Schenectady. The purpose of the meeting was to obtain student feedback on the District Code of Character, Conduct and Support. Elevating student voice in the decision making process in Schenectady schools is a top priority for my leadership team. The students were visited by SUNY President, Dr. Steady Moono and Schenectady mayor McCarthy. Thank you to our Office of Student Support Services for leading the discussion with our young scholars.

A major event that also took place at SUNY Schenectady this week was the Men of Color Summit. The district was proud to partner with SUNY Schenectady, Liberty Partnerships, Smart Scholars and Schenectady My Brother's Keeper on this informative and inspiring discussion. On my way out of the meeting, Leo, a member of the class of 2023, approached me and asked me about the Schenectady Promise. I had the pleasure of walking with him to admissions and setting him up with a counselor to help him select classes for the fall semester.

🚨REMINDER🚨 BUDGET VOTE AND BOARD ELECTION MAY 16

On May 16, taxpayers across New York State will head to the polls to vote on school budgets and board elections. In our district, we are asking our community to vote on six different items including:

Item #1: 2023-2024 Budget $265,267,298 - No impact on tax levy

Item #2: Schenectady Revitalization Plan 2030 - Tax impact zero
When you head to the polls on May 16, we are asking you to please also consider the Schenectady Revitalization Plan 2030. If approved, this plan would bring up to $300 million worth of building renovations and upgrades to our schools over the next seven years. Check your mailbox for the newsletter explaining the Schenectady Revitalization Plan 2030. This proposition must pass with a 60% super majority.

Item #3: Purchase of 530 Liberty Street, Schenectady for location of Family and Community Engagement Center. Tax impact zero
The district has identified the property at 530 Liberty St. as a purchase property for the Family and Community Engagement Center. The cost is $2.9 million. If approved by taxpayers, the facility will be used for the district's Family and Community Engagement Center (FACE) with the purpose of offering a welcoming first experience in the district and a one-stop shop for student registration, transportation, and other services and experiences. This center will also be used in the evening and on weekends for various community engagement events. We will also provide technology for families to use to register for school and to fill out an application for employment.

Item #4: Purchase of Keane Elementary School Building (Currently Owned by St. Luke's) - Tax impact zero
Voters are being asked to consider a proposal to purchase Keane Elementary School from St. Luke's. The district has been leasing the school building since July 2007 and is now seeking to purchase the school building for a one-time cost of $2 million. Purchase of this property would serve to provide much needed space for student enrollment, and in the long-term allow for expansion.

Item #5: Add a student member position to the board of education
The board is asking residents to vote on a proposition authorizing the addition of an ex-officio student member position on the board of education. A student board member will attend board meetings, sit at the board table and participate in public discussions, they will not vote or attend executive sessions.

Item #6: Elect Three Members to the Board of Education Terms for board members Bernice Rivera, Nohelani Etienne, and Princella Learry will end on June 30, 2023. Ms. Learry has announced that she will not be running for another term.

2023-2024 Board Candidates include:

Amanda Sponable-Pantalone

Nohelani Eitenne

Bernice Rivera

Anne D. Kennedy

Voting takes place at the district's 8 polling locations between noon and 9 p.m. on May 16, 2023.

On behalf of the HR team and the IEE team, I wanted to take a moment to thank everyone for helping to make this fair a success, from the employees who took time to come over and enjoy it, to the incredible O&M staff who set it all up, all the people who helped plan and made donations for our raffles, and of course Sodexo and SCLA for the amazing food!

Career Exploration with Career Jam at Schenectady High School

Career Jam at SHS virtual Reality

On Friday, Career Jam took place when Career Jam and the Schenectady City School District teamed up to bring two days of career exploration to Schenectady High School to finish out the week. Career Jam, aims to address the challenges that students, parents, educators, local employers, and area trades professionals face when searching for in-demand skills by bringing them all together for a hands-on demonstration of careers in the capital region.

The event provided an opportunity for dozens of local businesses, skilled trades, and educational partners to highlight career skills to students and families through hands-on demonstrations. It also promotes available career pathways in the high school’s leadership communities, certifications, higher education choices, and apprenticeship. Local participants included National Grid, Global Foundries, Jahnel Group, Siemens, STS Steel and dozens more!

We believe that everybody counts, and everybody learns, and through our partnership with Career Jam, we can now say that everybody in Schenectady can explore their potential and find their place in the workforce.
