WEEK ENDING January 05 2024| VOLUME 3 ISSUE NO. 18
I am excited to share that we have launched the first phase of our new Family and Community Engagement (FACE) Center. During the holiday recess many members of the Innovation, Equity and Engagement Team led by Dr. Carlos Cotto, including student registration, our community outreach specialist, innovation, equity and engagement specialist, senior parent liaison, and the community schools team relocated to the center located at 530 Liberty St. (downtown). The first week of student registration at the new location has been very busy. We are excited to welcome families in this spacious, comfortable, and welcoming setting. It is on the bus line and there is plenty of parking.
Our Human Resources Department was the first to move to the FACE center about a month ago. The team has been busy interviewing and onboarding new employees in their new space.
Other central office departments, including transportation, will be moving down there over the next several months. The center will serve as a one-stop-shop and hub of resources for our parents and community. Watch for more soon. #schenectadyrising

The Strategic Plan survey will close Monday morning. If you haven't participated, please do. We want to hear from you. Please complete it before Monday by clicking here.
Focus groups will begin next week. You can still register to participate in one of the seven groups. The schedule is on the flyer below. You can sign up for a focus group here. Two of the sessions will be virtual. If you haven't completed the survey or signed up for a focus group, please consider doing so. Your input will help guide the development of the 6-year Strategic Plan.
Staff Appreciation Night with Schenectady Wrestling
On Thursday evening, members of the Schenectady Patriots Wrestling team held their Staff Appreciation Night. Student athletes took a moment before their match to thank our amazing staff members for all they do for students in Schenectady schools.
Middle school students interested in cooking, food, and food production are invited to apply for the F.I.R.E Chefs program. This after school program is a collaboration of our Farm to School and the Schenectady Greenmarket. It connects students with local chefs, food producers, farmers, and culinary teachers through hands-on experiences. Fifteen students in grades 6-8 will be accepted. The application is here. Applicants should also ask a teacher, counselor, coach or other adult to complete the recommendation form. If you have questions or need more information, please contact Rebekka Henriksen at henriksenr@schenectadyschools.org
New York State Farm to School published an article on our maple sugaring/honey program this past fall and featured some of our work in an article about the NYS Farm to School Institute. Thank you to Rebekka Henriksen, Farm to School Project Manager, for the stellar work she's been doing with this program and our students.

Central Park students make homemade dog toys for shelter
In September and October, nearly 100 students from Central Park Middle School worked together to create homemade dog toys for pets up for adoption through the Animal Protective Foundation of Schenectady. Earlier this week, representatives from the foundation brought Izzy the dog in to receive the homemade toys and meet the students who worked on the project.
