Superintendent's Brief

SUPERINTENDENT'S BRIEF

Good afternoon and Happy Friday,

I will begin today by offering a huge congratulations to Dr. Carlos Cotto for being selected to serve as your next superintendent of schools. Also congratulations to the board of education and to all of you in our school community. You are extremely fortunate to have Dr. Cotto as your leader. Dr. Cotto is an experienced, caring, amazing leader who will continue guiding Schenectady schools on the path to success. While I have enjoyed my time here and will miss this district and community, I am very excited for all of you, knowing that you will be in Dr. Cotto's care.

The Board of Education held a press conference Wednesday evening making the official announcement before appointing him at the meeting that evening. Dr. Cotto's family members, colleagues and so many from the community, including city and county representatives, representatives from community groups and agencies and even neighboring school districts showed up to congratulate Dr. Cotto and show their support. It was a warm and celebratory reception. It was evident how much Dr. Cotto has done and what he means to this community. I am happy and excited for him and all of you as he begins this new journey.

As I said the other night, I'm proud of Dr. Cotto. He took a risk joining me in 2021 and I feel good knowing he's the one who will take over because his values are aligned to mine. I know that he will continue the work we started and keep moving things forward.

Dr. Cotto has done amazing work and made a huge difference in our district and the school community in a very short time. Since 2021, as the Assistant Superintendent of Innovation, Equity, and Engagement, Dr. Cotto has been instrumental launching and leading an array of programs and opportunities for our students and families, and building bridges with partners in our community. You can read more about Dr. Cotto and see photos from the press event here. (Daily Gazette story here)

Dr. Cotto has been part of my executive leadership team since he joined our district. I know how deeply he cares and how he feels about this community and school district. As he said in his remarks at the press event, the students are the heart of everything we do. I know that he speaks from his heart when he says that.

Dr. Cotto will officially take over as superintendent on May 1. Between now and then he will be working closely with me as he transitions into the role. With that said, my briefs will be coming to a close. We will continue to communicate with you between now and May 1, when Dr. Cotto takes the reins, but the focus will be more on what Dr. Cotto is doing, his plans and what will be coming up including updates on the district strategic plan, DEI assessments and planning, 2024-2025 Budget and capital project.

Please join me in congratulating Dr. Cotto. I know he will be planning some sessions to meet with stakeholders from all corners of the community. Stay tuned for more.

While I will still be here working with Dr. Cotto, I will be fading to the background until my departure at the end of April. Dr. Cotto will be taking the superintendent's seat at the table at the next Board of Education meeting and will be at the forefront for the district moving forward. It has been a great pleasure serving all of you. I will miss Schenectady but I know you are in great hands.

I want to give a huge shout out and thank you to the Rotary Club of Schenectady, many members of the community, as well as Dr. Cotto and his team, our maintenance team and Kerri Messler, principal at Keane, and the parent liaisons who are instrumental in welcoming and engaging parents.

A ribbon cutting ceremony and unveiling of the newly renovated community room at Keane Elementary School was held on Thursday. Thanks to the Schenectady Rotary Club and many others, the family resource room is equipped with fresh paint, new furniture, a renovated kitchen with appliances, a clothing closet, food pantry, laundry facility with new washers and dryers, and more. The new community room and amenities available to district families are part of the community school model that wraps around families by providing opportunities, resources, and support outside of the classroom in ways that are needed.

The Rotary not only spearheaded fundraising efforts and led the community room project but members also volunteered at a number of school events since the start of school. Last month, they responded to a need for boys winter coats by purchasing and donating more than 40 coats.

Dr. Cotto took the lead at this event. He thanked the Rotary Club and all who made this possible. When a need was identified, the Rotary Club stepped up and sponsored the project. As Dr. Cotto noted at the ribbon cutting, this outcome clearly shows "power of partnership."

The first day after his appointment, Dr. Cotto also met with The Superintendent's Student Advisory Council to hear directly from students about what they think he should work on in his first 100 days. Watch the video to hear the Q&A with student representatives from each school.

At Wednesday's Board of Education meeting, Mr. Gillooley provided a 2024-2025 Budget update. He reviewed staffing data, Contract for Excellence funding, a snapshot of what the revenue picture looks like, expenses, and the tax cap. While we can propose a tax levy increase of $1.7 million or 3.24%, as things stand now, we will not be proposing any tax levy increase. That would mean the levy would remain the same for the 6th consecutive year. Mr. Gillooley is collecting information and meeting with department and school leaders on the path to crafting a final budget. Updates will continue to be provided. You can view his presentation from Wednesday here.

If you were at the board meeting or watching the livestream, you may have noticed that there was a student sitting at the table with the board. That young lady is Zohanna Nizrudin, a senior from Schenectady High School, who was selected as one of the two student representatives to join the board. Joyce Akhelume, a junior, is the alternative rep who will take Zohanna's seat upon graduation. As most of you know, student voice is very important in our district. Kudos to the board for bringing that voice to board discussions. While the student reps will not be voting members, they will have the opportunity to share student opinion and perspective. Part of their responsibility will be to solicit input from students from all grades levels across the district.

Thank you to Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara for taking time from his busy schedule to read to students in Ms. Wood's first grade class at Hamilton Elementary Thursday morning in celebration of "Read Across America."

This week is School Social Work Week. This is designed to shine a spotlight on the dedicated professionals who play a pivotal role in enhancing the well-being and success of our students. Thank you to all of our school social workers for all that you do. Your commitment to fostering a positive school environment directly impacts everyone in our school community. We appreciate your unwavering dedication and compassion and the empathy, support and understanding that you offer to our students. Please join me in thanking all of our school social workers.

The next Board of Education meeting will be Wednesday, March 20. This was originally scheduled as a work session but has been changed to a regular meeting. At this meeting you can expect a budget update and an update on the revitalization plan. The meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the Mont Pleasant Middle School Schenectady Room and will be available via livestream.

There is no school for students next Wednesday, March 13 (Superintendent's Conference Day). On Thursday, March 14, interim reports will be mailed home for secondary students.

Again, since this will be my last brief, I wish to express sincere appreciation to all of you. I will be watching from afar and know this district will be doing great things.

I wish you a fantastic and restful weekend.

Sincerely,

Anibal Soler, Jr.
Superintendent of Schools
