CANDIDATES
The three candidates for the Board of Education will be listed on the ballot in the following order:
Jamaica Miles
I was born and raised in the City of Schenectady, am the proud mother of four, a long-standing activist, organizer and community-leader. All of my children have attended Schenectady schools, one returning to be a teacher, two still in our schools. I was elected to the SCSD Board in 2021 after winning my lawsuit in the NYSER case as the plaintiff representing Schenectady Schools against NYS, calling for public schools to be fully funded.
For nearly 20 years, I have worked in the non-profit sector for national, state-wide, and local organizations. I spend every day working toward a better world where everyone can thrive, and no one is struggling to survive. I am constantly looking for moments to build the larger “WE” through shared connections including people, programs, organizations, and businesses. I am often invited to speak at college campuses and community panel discussions.
I am running for re-election to continue to build on the work that has been done and to ensure that all voices are heard and considered.

Claudia Cavanagh
I was born, raised and educated in Schenectady. I’m married to my husband Thomas. After graduating from Mont Pleasant High School, I worked as an Administrative Assistant in the Engineering Department of General Electric. After working at GE, I became owner/operator of a hair salon for 19 years.
I loved owning the salon but realized that I needed to further educate myself to have a more secure financial future. Enrolling into Schenectady Community College’s Paralegal Studies program and studying the law was the turning point for me. I studied for months to prepare for the NYS Unified Court System entry exam, I scored high enough to be hired. After 26 years, and taking promotional exams to move up the ladder, I retired as a Principal Office Assistant with the New York State Court of Claims.
Always having an interest in talk radio, along the way I earned my NYS Broadcasters license and currently work part-time as Program Director for a local radio station.

Alexandria Carver
A Schenectady, NY resident and Mother of 3; two of which are currently students here in the City of Schenectady. I received my under graduates degree in public policy advocacy and civic engagement from Russel Sage College in Troy, NY.
During college I became passionate about serving within my local communities. I have served Schenectady for over a decade; supporting and advocating for equitable home ownership opportunities, Financial Literacy, foreclosure prevention and homeownership education.
My entire life has been about mentoring, educating, and advocating for not only my own children, but young people throughout the Capital Region.
My education and time serving the community from State, Non-profit and local government has prepared me for this role.
As current Director of Development and a homeowner in Schenectady, I understand the success of our students and School District directly influences the outcomes of economic development in this City.
As my children grow and learn in this School District I am seeking this opportunity to ensure all students can succeed; not just learn and not just count.
