Leroy Robert "Satchel" Paige was an American professional baseball pitcher who played in Negro league baseball and Major League Baseball. His career spanned five decades and culminated with his induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. #BHM


In 1986, Oprah was 1st African American woman to host a nationally syndicated talk show. In 1998, she created Oprah's Angel Network, a charity providing grants to nonprofit orgs. In 2004, Oprah became 1st African American woman to rank among 50 most generous Americans. #BHM

Dr. Robert Tanner Freeman was selected as one of the "first six-persons" to enter Harvard's Dental Program. Shortly after, he became the first African-American to graduate with a dental degree in the United States. #bhm

The Daily Gazette(1/21) highlighted some amazing African Americans who had impact locally. Among them was Classie Mae Cox who was the 1st Black teacher in SCSD. She taught at Riverside (1947) before moving to MKE where she was a driving force in desegregating schools there.#bhm
